Tank breathers play an important role in a hydraulic unit’s filtering system.
The oil levels in system containers are subject to permanent fluctuations due to temperature changes and through use of cylinders or pressure accumulators.
The resulting environmental pressure difference is balanced through the exchange of air through which contamination particles can access the system.
The penetration of contamination can be prevented by means of a breather filter.
Ideally, these breather filters should have at least the same filtration as the filters in lubricating and hydraulic circuits.
Benefits of breather filters with double-check valves
By using breather filters with double-check valves, the air exchange between the vessel and the surroundings can be substantially reduced whereby the entry of contamination and dust is minimised and the breather element's lifetime is increased.
When using ashless HLP and HLPD oils and for liquids based on Esters - HEES (Hydraulic Oil Environmental Ester Synthetic), the penetration of water from the surrounding ambient air must be prevented. For this reason, systems which are operated in subtropical areas should be equipped with tank breather filters with a water separation function.
